The Commentary on the Decision says: Difficulty at the Beginning shows the firm and the yielding first meeting, and movement arising amidst peril. Through peril it yet wins through, supreme success following firm correctness. When thunder and rain fill heaven and earth, Heaven brings forth the ten thousand things out of darkness. In such a time, princes should be established, yet one cannot rest at ease. The Image says: Clouds and thunder—the image of Difficulty at the Beginning. Thus the superior man unravels and orders the threads, bringing rule to the world.

"Tun" symbolizes the moment when thunder and rain shake the world, when a single yang line is born within water, within the pit, giving rise to all things out of obscurity. Hence there are many difficulties and obstacles. Yet birth itself is inherently difficult. In the midst of hardship we ought to recognize that the light brought forth by this nascent yang has already arrived, and we must steel ourselves with the firm resolve to overcome every obstacle, so as to welcome growth and development.
