Reference translation

The Small Taming: success. Dense clouds, no rain, rising from our western outskirts. The Tuan says: In Small Taming, the yielding line attains its place, and those above and below respond to it; hence it is called Small Taming. Strong and yet pliant, firm in the center and its will prevails — therefore success. "Dense clouds, no rain" — the movement is still upward. "From our western outskirts" — the dispensing is not yet accomplished. The Image says: The wind moving above the heaven forms the image of Small Taming. Thus the superior man refines the outward graces of his virtue.

Context from the authority layer

Everything that can come into being arises from the union of yin and yang. In the hexagram Xiao Xu, the yin energy is insufficient to match the yang energy, and so although there are "dense clouds," the sky still produces "no rain." Moreover, since "wind moves above the heavens," the cloud vapors drift away and cannot accumulate into the configuration needed for rain — in the end, they are scattered by the wind. This scene offers us a lesson: when our knowledge and virtue have not yet been gathered to the point where they surpass what stands against them, our aspirations likewise cannot find their way through.

Read the structure before the slogan

The lower trigram is 乾 (天), associated in the bundled corpus with 健; the upper trigram is 巽 (风), associated with 入. Read the lower trigram as the inner or starting field and the upper trigram as the outward field before turning the pattern into advice.

One accountable observation practice

Copy one concrete verb, condition, or image from the reference translation for Hexagram 9. Name one place where it is observable in the situation you are examining. Then choose one small step you can reverse and write the condition that would make you review it.

Common misread to avoid

Do not turn Small Taming into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
