Standstill

Reference translation

Obstruction: there is a standstill of evil men. It does not further the perseverance of the superior man. The great departs; the small approaches. Heaven and earth do not commingle, and the myriad things find no passage. Superiors and inferiors do not commune, and within the realm no true states arise. The dark is within, the light is without; the yielding is within, the firm is without; the mean men are within, the noble men are without. The way of the mean man waxes; the way of the superior man wanes.

Context from the authority layer

The Xugua commentary says: "Things cannot remain forever in a state of openness, therefore Pi follows." The Pi hexagram symbolizes the transition from a state of harmonious flow to one of obstruction and closure. At such a time, yang energy gradually declines while yin energy gradually grows; in human affairs, the noble person dwells outside in the wilderness while petty people occupy positions within the court; in terms of momentum, the noble person finds no avenue forward while petty people gain ascendancy.

Common misread to avoid

Do not turn Standstill into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
