Reference translation

Fellowship with men in the open country. Success. It furthers one to cross the great water. It furthers the perseverance of the superior man. The Commentary on the Decision says: In Fellowship with Men, the yielding finds its place and the central position, and responds to the Creative. Therefore it is called Fellowship with Men. The judgment says: "Fellowship with men in the open. Success. It furthers one to cross the great water." This is the action of the Creative. Clarity within and strength without, central and correct, responding above—such is the rectitude of the superior man. Only the superior man is able to unite the wills of all under heaven.

Context from the authority layer

In the hexagram Tongren, the second line wholeheartedly responds upward to the fifth line—this is what is meant by "that which is rooted in Heaven draws close to what is above." Drawing close brings harmony, harmony brings union, and so the "union" of Tongren is in truth the union of minds among the noble. Within, they hold the virtue of cultured brilliance; without, they maintain firm and vigorous conduct. In terms of image, this is "the suspended images shining forth," their light reaching the four quarters. In terms of virtue, it is firmness, vigor, centrality, and correctness—great and luminous.

Common misread to avoid

Do not turn Fellowship into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
