Reference translation

Following. Supreme success. It furthers one to undertake great deeds. No blame. The Commentary on the Judgment says: In Following, the firm comes and places itself beneath the yielding. Movement and joy: thus Following. Great success through perseverance, without blame, and all under heaven follows the time. Great indeed is the meaning of following the time. The Image says: Thunder within the lake — the image of Following. Thus the superior man, at nightfall, goes within for rest and repose.

Context from the authority layer

The reason Sui carries the meaning of "following" lies in its hexagram image of inner movement and outer joy. This image implicitly contains the act of "following," in which "the firm comes and places itself below the yielding." Thus the Zhouyi Zhezhong cites Wang Feng as saying: "When those above can lower themselves to those below, this is why those below follow those above; when the noble humbles themselves before the lowly, this is why the lowly follow the noble. The meaning of Sui is that the firm places itself below the yielding." Moreover, when thunder stirs through virtue, the multitude follow through virtue.

Common misread to avoid

Do not turn Following into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
