Reference translation

The Tuan says: In Kui, fire flames upward, while the waters of the marsh flow downward. Two women dwell together, yet their wills diverge and their ways are not the same. The lower trigram, joyous, cleaves with gladness to the brightness above; the yielding advances and moves upward, while the clinging, soft and central, responds below to the strong line in the second place. Therefore in small matters, handled with care and gentleness, there is good fortune. Heaven and earth are separate, yet their work is one. Man and woman are sundered, yet their wills are joined. All things under heaven differ in form and nature, yet their courses run alike. Great indeed is the office of opposition in the unfolding of things. The Image says: Fire above, the lake below: the image of Opposition.

Context from the authority layer

In the hexagram Kui, Li sits above and Dui below; their aspirations do not move in the same direction, yet they occupy a single hexagram together, as if dwelling within a single room. This is "sameness" within "difference." By the same token, dwelling within one room while each holds to its own nature, with above and below pulling apart, is "difference" within "sameness." The noble men of antiquity contemplated this image and grasped the way of "sameness and difference"—namely, that "being alike yet differing" is precisely the objective condition and necessary connection underlying the existence and development of things, the two complementing and completing each other.

Read the structure before the slogan

The lower trigram is 兑 (泽), associated in the bundled corpus with 悦; the upper trigram is 离 (火), associated with 丽. Read the lower trigram as the inner or starting field and the upper trigram as the outward field before turning the pattern into advice.

One accountable observation practice

Copy one concrete verb, condition, or image from the reference translation for Hexagram 38. Name one place where it is observable in the situation you are examining. Then choose one small step you can reverse and write the condition that would make you review it.

Common misread to avoid

Do not turn Opposition into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
