Reference translation
Obstruction: the southwest is favorable, the northeast unfavorable. It furthers one to see the great man. Perseverance brings good fortune. The Commentary says: Obstruction means difficulty; danger lies ahead. To see danger and know how to halt — this is wisdom indeed. "The southwest is favorable" — going thither, one attains the middle way. "The northeast is unfavorable" — that road leads to exhaustion. "It furthers one to see the great man" — going forward brings accomplishment. When each is in his proper place, perseverance brings good fortune, and thereby the kingdom is set in order. Great indeed is the work of the time of Obstruction.

Through hardship and adversity, jade is brought to completion. The Chinese nation has always possessed the spirit of being strengthened by manifold tribulations. The difficulty in *Jian* appears on the surface to be the difficulty of traveling a road, but in reality, its deeper significance lies in the difficulty of governing a state. This is why the *Xiang Zhuan* interprets the hexagram's image with phrases such as "it is beneficial to see a great person," "to rectify the state," and "to go forth and achieve merit.
