A source-first reading note for Hexagram 57, Xun (The Gentle Wind), with a reference translation, trigram frame, and one reversible observation practice.
Reference translation
The Gentle (Penetrating) signifies entering: there is slight success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great man. The Tuan says: Redoubled penetration, by which commands are reiterated. The firm penetrates into the central and correct place, and its will is carried out. The yielding all yield obedience to the firm. Hence "slight success; favorable to have somewhere to go; favorable to see the great man." The Hsiang says: Winds following one upon another — the image of the Gentle. Thus the superior man reiterates his commands and carries his affairs into action.

Context from the authority layer
The *Shuogua* states that "Xun represents wind." When the wind moves, there is nothing it does not enter and nothing it does not penetrate. The *Analects* says: "The virtue of the gentleman is like wind; the virtue of the small man is like grass. When the wind passes over the grass, the grass must bend." The sages and noble men of antiquity observed the image of the wind's movement and thereby understood how moral instruction and government decrees take hold among the people. Thus, when applied to people, it makes them comply willingly rather than resist; when applied to affairs, it follows along continuously, entering one after another without interruption.

Common misread to avoid
Do not turn The Gentle Wind into a personality label, a guaranteed event, or a verdict about another person. The translation and trigram frame are source layers to examine, not an instruction to surrender judgment.
