After completion. Success in small matters; it furthers one to be persevering. At the beginning, good fortune; at the end, disorder. The Tuan says: "After completion, success" — small matters find their way through. "It furthers one to be persevering" — the firm and the yielding are correct, and each stands in its proper place. "At the beginning, good fortune" — the yielding attains the center. "At the end, disorder ensues" — the way is exhausted.

All six lines of Jiji occupy correct positions and each finds its proper correspondence, so affairs both great and small attain success. Yet the more this is so, the more one must hold fast to the right path, for once correctness is exhausted, the end gives way to disorder. In terms of the hexagram image, water above fire serves both to cook food and to extinguish flames—both signifying "the task already accomplished." But the worthiness of the noble person lies precisely in the ability to remain mindful of danger amid success and to guard against trouble before it arises. Only thus can the fruits of the "initial good fortune" be preserved.
