4 · Meng · Youthful Folly

Youthful Folly leads to success. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me. At the first oracle I instruct. If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. To importunity I give no instruction. Perseverance furthers.

The hexagram Meng carries both the meaning of childish ignorance and the image of engaging a teacher for enlightenment.

49 · Ge · Revolution

Revolution. On the appointed day, the change wins men's trust. Sublime success. Furtherance through perseverance. Remorse vanishes. The Commentary: Revolution. Water and fire annihilate each other. Two daughters dwell together, but their wills do not accord — this is called Revolution. "On the appointed day trust is given": when change comes, the people believe in it. Inner clarity joined with joyousness; great success through correctness. When revolution is fitting, remorse departs.

In the Ge hexagram, amid the upheaval caused by the conflicting forces of "water and fire shooting at each other," only the nine-in-the-fourth line is out of position.

What the structural contrast actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 4's opposite as Hexagram 49, and Hexagram 49's opposite as Hexagram 4. Every line changes polarity across this pair. Use that structural fact to compare conditions, not to label one side good and the other bad.

Two-column comparison practice

Make two columns headed Meng and Ge. Under each, copy one phrase from its reference translation and one observable condition from the situation you are studying. Circle the condition that would have to change before the other column became more relevant. Choose one reversible step and a review date.

Common misread to avoid

An opposite pair is not a before-and-after promise. Meng does not automatically become Ge, and the pair does not decide which person or outcome is correct. It is a disciplined contrast for closer observation.
