6 · Song · Conflict

Conflict. There is sincerity within, yet obstruction breeds apprehension. To halt midway brings good fortune; to press through to the end brings misfortune. It furthers one to see the great man. It does not further one to cross the great water.

36 · Ming Yi · Darkening of the Light

Ming I. Brightness wounded: it furthers one to be persevering in adversity. The Image says: The light has sunk into the earth — this is Ming I. Inwardly clear and outwardly yielding, thus enduring great calamity: such was King Wen. "It furthers one to be persevering in adversity" — he veils his light. Beset by hardship within, yet able to keep his will upright: such was the Prince of Chi.

The hexagram Mingyi uses the concise judgment "favorable in difficulty and perseverance" to illustrate the virtues and methods one should uphold when caught in adversity.

What the structural contrast actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 6's opposite as Hexagram 36, and Hexagram 36's opposite as Hexagram 6. Every line changes polarity across this pair. Use that structural fact to compare conditions, not to label one side good and the other bad.

Two-column comparison practice

Make two columns headed Song and Ming Yi. Under each, copy one phrase from its reference translation and one observable condition from the situation you are studying. Circle the condition that would have to change before the other column became more relevant. Choose one reversible step and a review date.

Common misread to avoid

An opposite pair is not a before-and-after promise. Song does not automatically become Ming Yi, and the pair does not decide which person or outcome is correct. It is a disciplined contrast for closer observation.
