37 · Jia Ren · The Family

The Family. It is favorable for the woman to hold fast to the right. The Commentary on the Judgment says: In the Family, the woman holds her correct place within, and the man holds his correct place without. That man and woman each keep their proper place is the great righteousness of Heaven and Earth. Within the family there are strict rulers: these are the father and mother.

This commentary reads Li below and Xun above as an image of entry into a household, using period-specific family roles to interpret Jiaren.

40 · Jie · Deliverance

Deliverance. The southwest is favorable. If there be no further need to go forth, return brings good fortune. If there yet remains somewhere to go, then early action brings good fortune. The Image says: Deliverance. Amid peril there is movement; through movement one escapes from peril — this is Deliverance. "Deliverance: the southwest is favorable" — going forth one wins the multitude. "Return brings good fortune" — thus the mean is attained.
