38 · Kui · Opposition

The Tuan says: In Kui, fire flames upward, while the waters of the marsh flow downward. Two women dwell together, yet their wills diverge and their ways are not the same. The lower trigram, joyous, cleaves with gladness to the brightness above; the yielding advances and moves upward, while the clinging, soft and central, responds below to the strong line in the second place. 39 · Jian · Obstruction

Obstruction: the southwest is favorable, the northeast unfavorable. It furthers one to see the great man. Perseverance brings good fortune. The Commentary says: Obstruction means difficulty; danger lies ahead. To see danger and know how to halt — this is wisdom indeed. "The southwest is favorable" — going thither, one attains the middle way. "The northeast is unfavorable" — that road leads to exhaustion. "It furthers one to see the great man" — going forward brings accomplishment.

Through hardship and adversity, jade is brought to completion. The Chinese nation has always possessed the spirit of being strengthened by manifold tribulations.

What the structural contrast actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 38's opposite as Hexagram 39, and Hexagram 39's opposite as Hexagram 38. Every line changes polarity across this pair. Use that structural fact to compare conditions, not to label one side good and the other bad.

Two-column comparison practice

Make two columns headed Kui and Jian. Under each, copy one phrase from its reference translation and one observable condition from the situation you are studying. Circle the condition that would have to change before the other column became more relevant. Choose one reversible step and a review date.

Common misread to avoid

An opposite pair is not a before-and-after promise. Kui does not automatically become Jian, and the pair does not decide which person or outcome is correct. It is a disciplined contrast for closer observation.

Source boundary

The two reference translations and context notes come from Yarrow's bundled structured Zhouyi authority layer. The opposite-pair relation comes from the same local corpus. This comparison is not a fresh cast or a forecast.
