51 · Zhen · The Arousing Thunder

Thunder, the image of Shock, brings success. When the thunder comes, there is terror and trembling; yet from this fear is born good fortune. Afterwards there is laughter and joyful words, for order has been established. The thunder startles for a hundred miles; it alarms those afar and strikes dread into those near. Yet the sacrificial spoon and chalice are not let fall.

The hexagram Zhen uses the awe-inspiring power of thunder as a metaphor for the authority of political power.

57 · Xun · The Gentle Wind

The Gentle (Penetrating) signifies entering: there is slight success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great man. The Tuan says: Redoubled penetration, by which commands are reiterated. The firm penetrates into the central and correct place, and its will is carried out. The yielding all yield obedience to the firm. Hence "slight success; favorable to have somewhere to go; favorable to see the great man.

The *Shuogua* states that "Xun represents wind." When the wind moves, there is nothing it does not enter and nothing it does not penetrate.

What the structural contrast actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 51's opposite as Hexagram 57, and Hexagram 57's opposite as Hexagram 51. Every line changes polarity across this pair. Use that structural fact to compare conditions, not to label one side good and the other bad.

Two-column comparison practice

Make two columns headed Zhen and Xun. Under each, copy one phrase from its reference translation and one observable condition from the situation you are studying. Circle the condition that would have to change before the other column became more relevant. Choose one reversible step and a review date.

Common misread to avoid

An opposite pair is not a before-and-after promise. Zhen does not automatically become Xun, and the pair does not decide which person or outcome is correct. It is a disciplined contrast for closer observation.

Source boundary

The two reference translations and context notes come from Yarrow's bundled structured Zhouyi authority layer. The opposite-pair relation comes from the same local corpus. This comparison is not a fresh cast or a forecast.
