Inmost Sincerity. When sincerity reaches even to pigs and fishes, there is good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. It furthers one to be persevering. The Commentary says: In Inmost Sincerity, the yielding lines are within and the firm hold the central places. Joyousness met with gentleness — sincerity thus transforms the land. "Pigs and fishes, good fortune": the truth reaches even to pigs and fishes.

The hexagram image of "the soft within and the firm attaining the center" gives Zhongfu its virtue of sincerity and trustworthiness.

62 · Xiao Guo · Small Exceeding

Small Excess. Success. Perseverance furthers. Small affairs may be undertaken; great affairs may not. The flying bird leaves behind its call: it should not strive upward, but descend. Thus great good fortune. The Commentary says: Small Excess — the small passes beyond and attains success. Excess that furthers through perseverance moves with the time. The yielding holds the middle, hence good fortune in small affairs.

Xiaoguo stands in contrast to Daguo. In Daguo, four yang lines occupy the center, with yang in abundance and positioned within, yang prevailing over yin—hence the name...
