Lin and Guan: What a Zong Gua Inverse Pair Shows

Compare Hexagram 19 Lin (Approach) and Hexagram 20 Guan (Contemplation) as a zong gua inverse pair: reversed line order changes viewing direction without forecasting a transition.

19 · Lin · Approach

Lin. Approach. Sublime success. Furthering through perseverance. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune. The Commentary on the Decision says: In Approach, the firm gradually waxes and grows. Joyous and devoted, the firm holds the central place and finds response. Great success through uprightness — this is the way of Heaven.

In the hexagram Lin, there is the trend of yang energy gradually growing. Yang is the great, and represents the noble person.

20 · Guan · Contemplation

CONTEMPLATION. The ablution has been made, but not yet the offering. Full of trust they look up to him. The Commentary on the Decision says: The great sight is above. Devoted and gentle, central and correct, he presents himself to the world. CONTEMPLATION.

The hexagram statement takes "having sincerity, dignified and reverent" as its view, while the Commentary on the Image takes "the great view above" and "centered and correct, viewing all under heaven" as its view.

What the 综卦 relation actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 19's 综卦 (zong gua, inverse) as Hexagram 20, and Hexagram 20's inverse as Hexagram 19. In the corpus's stored six-line sequence, 000110 becomes 011000 when the order is reversed. Turning the figure end for end changes line positions while preserving each line's yin or yang polarity.

Reverse, compare, then test

Draw 000110 and 011000 in two columns, reverse the first sequence, and verify the match. Then copy one concrete phrase from the reference layer for Lin and one from Guan; name one observable condition supporting each lens, choose one reversible check, and write what evidence would make you review the choice.

Common misread to avoid

A zong gua pair is not a before-and-after promise. Lin does not automatically become Guan; reversed structure neither ranks the two figures nor says which one must follow.

Source boundary

The reference layers and the zong-gua relationship come from Yarrow's bundled structured Zhouyi corpus. The English wording is an editorial explanation of that stored relation. This note is not a fresh cast, a forecast, or a claim that one hexagram must turn into the other.
