Zhen and Gen: What a Zong Gua Inverse Pair Shows

Compare Hexagram 51 Zhen (The Arousing Thunder) and Hexagram 52 Gen (Keeping Still Mountain) as a zong gua inverse pair: reversed line order changes viewing direction without forecasting a transition.

51 · Zhen · The Arousing Thunder

Thunder, the image of Shock, brings success. When the thunder comes, there is terror and trembling; yet from this fear is born good fortune. Afterwards there is laughter and joyful words, for order has been established. The thunder startles for a hundred miles; it alarms those afar and strikes dread into those near.

The hexagram Zhen uses the awe-inspiring power of thunder as a metaphor for the authority of political power. Amid the sound of thunder, people receive warning; amid the sound of thunder, people learn to examine...

52 · Gen · Keeping Still Mountain

KEEPING STILL signifies arrest. He keeps his back still, so that he no longer feels his body. He walks in his courtyard and does not see his people. No blame. The Commentary on the Image says: Ken means stopping. When it is time to stop, then stop; when it is time to act, then act.

The hexagram Gen reveals two distinctive features: first, no line corresponds with another; second, the lines in their proper positions (Six in the Second, Nine in the Third, Six in the Fourth) are all inauspicious.

What the 综卦 relation actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 51's 综卦 (zong gua, inverse) as Hexagram 52, and Hexagram 52's inverse as Hexagram 51. In the corpus's stored six-line sequence, 100100 becomes 001001 when the order is reversed. Turning the figure end for end changes line positions while preserving each line's yin or yang polarity.

Reverse, compare, then test

Draw 100100 and 001001 in two columns, reverse the first sequence, and verify the match. Then copy one concrete phrase from the reference layer for Zhen and one from Gen; name one observable condition supporting each lens, choose one reversible check, and write what evidence would make you review the choice.

Common misread to avoid

A zong gua pair is not a before-and-after promise. Zhen does not automatically become Gen; reversed structure neither ranks the two figures nor says which one must follow.

Source boundary

The reference layers and the zong-gua relationship come from Yarrow's bundled structured Zhouyi corpus. The English wording is an editorial explanation of that stored relation. This note is not a fresh cast, a forecast, or a claim that one hexagram must turn into the other.
