Jian and Gui Mei: What a Zong Gua Inverse Pair Shows

Compare Hexagram 53 Jian (Gradual Progress) and Hexagram 54 Gui Mei (The Marrying Maiden) as a zong gua inverse pair: reversed line order changes viewing direction without forecasting a transition.

53 · Jian · Gradual Progress

Gradual Progress. Like the maiden given in marriage, advancing step by step brings good fortune. Furtherance. The Commentary on the Judgment says: Gradualness means advancing slowly. Thus the maiden's marriage is fortunate. Advancing, she attains her proper place; going forward, she achieves merit.

In the Shuogua, "xun means to enter" and "xun is wood." The way wind enters the mountains has the momentum of gradual advance, and the growth of trees likewise proceeds gradually—hence the hexagram is called Jian...

54 · Gui Mei · The Marrying Maiden

The Marrying Maiden: to advance brings misfortune; nothing furthers. The Image says: The marrying of the maiden is the great meaning of heaven and earth. When heaven and earth do not unite, the ten thousand things do not flourish. The marrying maiden is the end and beginning of mankind. Joyousness in movement — such is the marrying maiden.

This commentary interprets Gui Mei through historical marriage customs and the hexagram's improper line positions, especially the yielding line riding on the firm.

What the 综卦 relation actually says

The local structured corpus records Hexagram 53's 综卦 (zong gua, inverse) as Hexagram 54, and Hexagram 54's inverse as Hexagram 53. In the corpus's stored six-line sequence, 011001 becomes 100110 when the order is reversed. Turning the figure end for end changes line positions while preserving each line's yin or yang polarity.

Reverse, compare, then test

Draw 011001 and 100110 in two columns, reverse the first sequence, and verify the match. Then copy one concrete phrase from the reference layer for Jian and one from Gui Mei; name one observable condition supporting each lens, choose one reversible check, and write what evidence would make you review the choice.

Common misread to avoid

A zong gua pair is not a before-and-after promise. Jian does not automatically become Gui Mei; reversed structure neither ranks the two figures nor says which one must follow.

Source boundary

The reference layers and the zong-gua relationship come from Yarrow's bundled structured Zhouyi corpus. The English wording is an editorial explanation of that stored relation. This note is not a fresh cast, a forecast, or a claim that one hexagram must turn into the other.
